It’s crucial that the goals or dreams we invest in align with who we are and what truly matters to us—especially after surviving domestic abuse. Healing and rebuilding your life requires clarity and focus on what’s truly right for you.
Geoffrey Avert once said, “The most important thing about having a goal is having one.” The same can be said for your dreams. First, you need to establish what you desire, and more importantly, determine if that dream resonates with your soul before it can become a reality.
Here are five questions to guide you in deciding if your dream is the right one for you:
Do you feel passionate about your dream?
When your dream is aligned with your true self, you’ll feel an emotional connection. Thinking about it will spark a sense of excitement and make you feel alive. This is key in the healing process, as it motivates and uplifts you.
Does your dream align with your core values?
Your dream must align with the values that matter most to you. If it’s in conflict with those core beliefs—such as the freedom, safety, and respect you’ve fought for—then it won’t be fulfilling or sustainable.
Does your dream challenge you to grow?
After overcoming domestic abuse, you’ve already proven your strength. Your dream should push you further, encouraging personal growth, healing, and empowerment. If it doesn’t challenge you to expand, it might not be big enough.
Do you need support from a Higher Power?
If you already know every step to achieve your dream, it may not stretch you enough. Often, the dreams that require us to lean on something greater—whether it’s faith, community, or self-belief—are the ones that help us heal and transform.
Is there good in your dream for others?
True healing involves giving back. A dream aligned with your heart will often include a ripple effect that benefits others. Whether it’s offering support to fellow survivors or raising awareness about domestic abuse, a meaningful dream often touches lives beyond your own.
While you may have many wishes or ideas, it’s essential to focus on your deepest desires—the ones that resonate with your true self, beyond the pain of the past. You have the power to choose a path that brings you peace and joy. By co-creating with the Universe, you can manifest the dream that aligns with your heart and values.
